Just like the weather, tech in the IoT space seems to be ever-changing.
Here, Vodafone’s David Tirado talks life at V by Vodafone, and sheds light on what future tech trends we can look forward to from the IoT team.
Do you think people are now more aware of what IoT is?
IoT refers to the Internet of Things, which means connecting the Internet wirelessly into various machines and devices.
I think there is definitely a growing awareness around “smart homes”, as the number of IoT devices that let you control your lighting, home security, thermostat, and other home appliances has grown dramatically in recent years.
There isn’t awareness around the possibilities that IoT technology will open up though – which is an extremely exciting subject. Modern IoT technology has the potential to transform every aspect of our lives, from the way we manage our health to the way we shop, and it will be extremely interesting to see how this technology is developed over the next decade.
What is a typical day in the life of Head of Sales at V by Vodafone?
Busy! My day usually revolves around meetings and phone calls to find out how V by Vodafone products are performing in terms of sales, and which products are trending or doing well that week.
Our new IoT range is currently available in four countries – so my role also involves engaging with our global sales teams and keeping them motivated.
It’s a very numbers driven job, but customer satisfaction and experience with our products is of upmost importance. We hold regular focus groups, send out surveys, and also talk to our customers to find out about the experience they’re having with our products.
After all, customer experience hugely influences product development; we want to create products that fill our customer’s worlds with confidence and solve their everyday problems, stresses or worries.
What is the best part of your job?
When you have spent a lot of time and effort defining customer insight and believe you have products that can really change people’s lives for the better – it’s a wonderful feeling to see those products live on sites like Amazon.
How do you think Vodafone is taking the lead in the CIoT market and specifically in your product area?
We’re without doubt the mobile world leader in IoT, and we’re also the first company to market with an integrated proposition: our exciting smart products are all managed through one simple app, so control has never been so easy!
Our new CIoT range includes a smart car dongle, a 4G security camera, a pet tracker, and a GPS tracker for your bag, all which connect to our global IoT network, which is the largest of its kind in the world.
What do you think we can look forward to in the future from your team/ in your specific product area? Are there any consumer trends?
The market is starting to awaken to the exciting possibilities of the Internet of Things. I’m not sure when that exponential growth will come – but over the next decade, the expansion of IoT into consumer markets will bring about an equally dramatic shift in how people manage their daily lives, at home and in their leisure time.
We are heavily investing in the IoT category, and will be bringing more products to market that will allow people to connect the important things in life and shape their future with confidence. Watch this space…
What have you been reading/ listening to recently?
I am in the middle of reading the “Innovators dilemma” by Clayton Christensen and really reflecting on how different technologies can disrupt an entire industry. It’s really stimulating looking at our space of “Internet of Things” and how we could also change industries and value chains with new technology. Great food for thought.
